Do firms innovate when their rivals consolidate? Supplementary maps
Interactive companions to the data appendix, drawn from the FactSet Revere Supply Chain Relationships records, 2003 to 2021.
- Firm-level map. One dot per firm at its headquarters: blue firms name at least one competitor, orange entities are named but name none. Zoom to see cities, hover a dot for the firm's name and its years, and use the control at the top right to hide either group or to switch to clustered counts that split as you zoom in.
- Country-to-country rivalry flows. Each arc joins the country of incorporation of a naming firm to that of the rival it names, for the pairs of firms incorporated in different countries; darker and thicker arcs carry more rival pairs, each directed pair of firms counting once over 2003 to 2021. The slider keeps only the largest flows, and hovering an arc or a country gives its count.
- Industry-to-industry chord diagram. The rival pairs by the two-digit SIC industries of the two firms, a few small ones grouped, drawn as chords whose width is the number of pairs: each directed pair of firms counts once over 2003 to 2021, and the two directions between two industries are combined. A chord that returns to its own industry is rivalry within it. The slider keeps only the largest chords, and hovering a chord or an industry gives the counts.
